Peacemakers are NOT "nice" people. They are Protective. (pt. 16 in the Series on Forgiveness).

The word 'peacemaker" (Mt. 5:9) has often been used to suggest that godly people are those who focus on creating and promoting "harmony" between two people, regardless of who the other person is or what they've done. It is also often associated with forgiving 70 X 70 (Mt. 18:22). But, it that what Jesus was talking about, when he used the term? Are we to assume that one of God's priorities for people is to get along, regardless of what has happened, and regardless of the degree of perpetration on the part of an unrepentant oppressor or perpetrator? The good news to those deeply harmed by perpetrators and oppressors is that peacemaking is anything but "being nice.". The true meaning of Jesus' words are indeed good news to those who've been harmed... and, to those answering the call to protect them.

In this episode of his extended series on 'Forgiveness: What it is vs. what it is not,' Journey to Healing host, Jon K. Uhler, LPC, looks at what Jesus meant in his first recorded public sermon, when He describes those would be blessed by God. This section of scripture has unfortunately been poorly understood in terms of the message of hope being to two groups of people closest to God's heart... those deeply wounded by oppressors, and those who answer the call to protect them. The message Jesus gave, and its meaning, is truly good news, as a peacemaker is anything but passive in the face of evil.
