The Easy Way to Attach A Neon Light To Your Art:
Tools needed: drill, drill bit, Philips screw bit, wing nut driver, Q-hangers, framing wire, wire cutters, Philips screw driver, screws, tube support clips (same diameter as neon light), neon sign transformer, Electrode Cap Silicon Boot (they come in black or white), one neon light, one painting
Measure where you’ll drill your hole.
Make sure wires are long enough & include 2-4 inches slack.
Attach transformer in the same quadrant as the hole. OR…you can drill a hole through a back panel and run wiring through it.
Avoid drilling more screws through canvas to hold the transformer in place. Instead, use Q-hangers and framing wire to hang the transformer on the back.
Drill in Q-hangers in with a Wing Nut Driver
This allows the customer to detach and replace the transformer when needed without damaging the art.
Temporarily detach the transformer and set it aside
Choose a drill bit size that is slightly narrower than the 2 transformer wires. Drill the wire hole from the front of the canvas
Attach the tube support clips to the neon light and test each leg to see if they’re positioned for maximum stability
Place the light on the front of the canvas
Use a low-torque to avoid stripping the screws. Self-tapping screws are great. (I use flat heads 16mm long, 3mm wide.)
Screw in each screw ALMOST all the way, holding it steady with your fingers, leaving a little bit of wiggle room in case you need to adjust.
Make sure the light is secure, the clips are straight, then screw in the screws manually with a screwdriver. Do not push too hard on your canvas to avoid damage.
Reattach transformer to the back.
Run the wires through to the front of the canvas.
Twist the wires together with the end of the neon light. (Note: it doesn’t matter which wire goes on which end of the light)
Carefully apply the silicon boot to each end to cover the wires.
Plug in the light and make sure it works.
