Apollo 15's Unique Journey: An Unprecedented Ride
The Apollo 15 mission achieved several significant milestones in crewed spaceflight, marking its 50th anniversary this year. On July 26, 1971, astronauts David R. Scott (Commander), James B. Irwin (Lunar Module Pilot), and Alfred M. Worden (Command Module Pilot) were launched from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39A.
Apollo 15 made history by being the first mission to deploy the Lunar Roving Vehicle on the Moon, enabling astronauts to explore much greater distances than previous missions. It also set various records, including carrying the heaviest payload in lunar orbit (around 107,000 pounds), traveling the farthest from the spacecraft on the lunar surface (about 17.5 miles), conducting the most lunar surface moonwalks (three), achieving the longest total duration for lunar surface moonwalks (18 hours and 37 minutes), spending the longest time in lunar orbit (approximately 145 hours), holding the record for the longest crewed lunar mission (295 hours), being the longest Apollo mission, successfully placing the first satellite in lunar orbit using a crewed spacecraft, and conducting the first deep space and operational spacewalks.
