The South African Zulu leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi has died at the age of 95. His death was announced by president Cyril Ramaphosa, who described him as an outstanding leader and said he was saddened by his passing. Buthelezi was the founder of the Inkhata freedom party, a Zulu political and cultural movement with nearly two million members. Alongside former president Nelson Mandela, he was a key figure in South Africa's transformation from a white apartheid state into a multi-racial democracy in the 1990s. But his legacy is also controversial.
