Hello fellow Traveler and welcome to The Hard Light Network!

When you think about "Video Games" what comes to mind? Maybe a 2D side scrolling adventure? Could be a Top-Down Building Sim? But it's likely that for most of you, the first image that comes to mind is probably an action packed, First Person Shooter. But have shooters hit their peak?

With their widespread popularity and adaptability, it's no surprise that the FPS genre has become ubiquitous with "video games" as a whole. Some of the earliest titles in gaming history placed players directly in the shoes of their protagonist as they battled through waves of soldiers, zombie hordes, gangs of monsters and more. With the popularity of these early titles enduring to this day, perpetuated by sequels, reboots, spin-offs, and spiritual successors. Notoriety however, can be a gift as much as it can be a curse, and as such these games are often the usual suspects when controversy strikes, offering low hanging fruit for censorious critics. However, with the massive role shooters play in competitive gaming not to mention the millions of dollars in military funding at their backs the censors will have to be content with small victories against this titanic industry.

So why would anyone say that First Person Shooters have peaked? With new titles releasing annually, fan bases that now span multiple generations, and the aforementioned popularity of the genre, how could anyone come to the conclusion that they've peaked? Well. Hear me out.
