The two main characteristics of human civilizations have always been the ability to attack and seek protection. Since its inception, this has had a tremendous impact on architecture. Ancient and mediaeval architecture were characterized by the building of defensive city walls as well as hidden tunnels and corridors. The existence of underground cities, however, was unknown until recently. These societies revealed a variety of secrets; some were lost long ago, while others date back only to World War II.
