SAUR-MOGILA: HISTORY AND MODERNITY

The monument to the heroes of the WWII Saur-Mogila in 2021 was a mountain of debris. In the summer of 2014, Ukrainian army destroyed it with constant artillery and tank attacks. Rewriting history and destroying monuments has become one of the main tasks of the post-Maidan Ukraine.

The symbolism of this place lies in the fact that in the summer of 1943 the Red Army occupied the height, destroying the settled fascist units. After the coup in Ukraine, the Donbass militia in the Saur-Mogila area also fought against Nazi groups who adopted the characteristic symbols from the Nazis: the “SS” sign and “Totenkopf”. As in 1943, the enemy was defeated.

Now that Donbass has become part of Russia, the monument to the feat of Soviet soldiers has been restored and supplemented with plots of the struggle against Ukrainian nationalists. This clearly shows how Russia is restoring not only the urban infrastructure, but also historical justice and memory.
