A green screen is a large green backdrop placed in the background of a shot to allow for digital effects later. In post-production, the special effects department edits the background from green to anything they want with CGI or background footage called "plates." Chroma keying is also common in the entertainment industry for visual effects in movies and video games.

Rotoscopy may instead be carried out on subjects that are not in front of a green (or blue) screen.

Motion tracking can also be used in conjunction with chroma keying, such as to move the background as the subject moves.

Green screens and blue screens are both used for the same purpose: to use Chroma Key technology to place subjects in front of a projected background. The colors green and blue are ideal for the Chroma Key process as opposed to the color red.
