Portland Ranks 61st in Economic Recovery Among Major U.S. Cities

Once the Mecca of hipster paradise and a brewpub on every corner, downtown Portland is now scraping the bottom of the barrel, ranking 61 out of 62 big cities for economic recovery. The metrics are based on cell phone activity in downtown cores, and this ranking places Portland just above San Francisco (so they've got that going for them, which is nice). Meanwhile, the city's brass and a task force led by Governor Tina Kotex are "figuring out what needs to be done," which might as well be Oregon's new state motto. Critics are saying the metrics don't include "all of downtown Portland." Oh, forgive us! We thought business districts were usually the heart of a city's economy, not the colleges teaching 19th-century agrarian philosophy.

Look, folks, Portland can't blame this dismal showing on the metrics. Even if the city wants to argue about which areas should be included for a more favorable recovery snapshot, the fact remains: businesses have left the Central City, the tax base is shrinking, and a lot of rethinking and reimagining is going on—except, you know, the kind that yields results. A ranking of 61 out of 62 isn't just a number; it's a glaring neon sign that says, "Time for a Change, Maybe?" If things are so peachy, why did Mayor Ted request 96 state troopers for downtown? Let's call a spade a spade: Portland's downtown is in trouble, and no amount of mental gymnastics can flip that narrative.
