The History of the Canadian Football League

The Canadian Football League (CFL) is the highest level of professional gridiron football in Canada. The league was founded in 1958, but its roots can be traced back to the late 19th century.

The first organized football games in Canada were played in the 1860s. These games were played under the rules of rugby football, which was the dominant form of football in Canada at the time. In 1884, the Canadian Rugby Football Union (CRFU) was formed to govern the sport of rugby football in Canada.

In 1909, the Grey Cup was donated by Governor General the Earl Grey to the team winning the Senior Amateur Football Championship of Canada. The Grey Cup quickly became the most prestigious trophy in Canadian football.

In the early 1900s, the CRFU began to split into two regional conferences: the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. This split was formalized in 1907, when the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union (IRFU) was formed for the Western Conference teams.

In 1956, the WIFU and the IRFU established an umbrella organization called the Canadian Football Council. Two years later, it reorganized as the Canadian Football League, and the CFL took possession of the Grey Cup.

The CFL has grown steadily since its inception. Today, the league consists of nine teams, divided into two divisions: the East Division and the West Division. The regular season runs from June to November, and the Grey Cup is played on the second Sunday in November.

The CFL is a popular sport in Canada. The Grey Cup is one of the largest annual sporting events in the country, and it is often watched by more than 2 million people. The CFL also has a strong television following, and its games are broadcast in Canada and the United States.

The CFL has faced some challenges in recent years. In 2020, the league was forced to cancel its season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the CFL has rebounded from this setback, and it is now considered to be one of the most stable professional sports leagues in Canada.

The CFL is a valuable part of Canadian culture. The league's games are exciting and entertaining, and they provide a sense of national pride for Canadians. The CFL is also a major economic force in Canada, and it generates millions of dollars in revenue each year.
