Gladiator is a 2000 historical epic film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Djimon Hounsou, and Richard Harris. The film is set in 180 AD and tells the story of Maximus Decimus Meridius (Crowe), a Roman general who is betrayed and murdered by Commodus (Phoenix), the illegitimate son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Harris). Maximus is then forced to become a gladiator in order to avenge the death of his family and friends.
