ابوحفص عمر فاروق بن خطاب عدوی قرشی (586ء/590ء، مکہ - 6 نومبر 644ء، مدینہ) ابوبکر صدیق کے بعد مسلمانوں کے دوسرے خلیفہ راشد، محمد مصطفی صَلَّی اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ کے سسر اور تاریخ اسلام کی اہم ترین شخصیات میں سے ایک ہیں۔ عمر بن خطاب عشرہ مبشرہ میں سے ہیں، ان کا شمار علما و زاہدین صحابہ میں ہوتا تھا۔ ابوبکر صدیق کی وفات کے بعد 23 اگست سنہ 634ء مطابق 22 جمادی الثانی سنہ 13ھ کو مسند خلافت سنبھالی۔ عمر بن خطاب ایک باعظمت، انصاف پسند اور عادل حکمران مشہور ہیں، ان کی عدالت میں مسلم و غیر مسلم دونوں کو یکساں انصاف ملا کرتا تھا، عمر بن خطاب کا یہ عدل و انصاف انتہائی مشہور ہوا اور ان کے لقب فاروق کی دیگر وجوہ تسمیہ میں ایک وجہ یہ بھی بنی۔ آپ رضی اللہ عنہ کا نسب نویں پشت میں رسول اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ و آلہ و سلم سے جا ملتا ہے۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ و آلہ و سلم کی نویں پشت میں کعب کے دو بیٹے ہیں مرہ اور عدی۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ و آلہ و سلم مرہ کی اولاد میں سے ہیں، جبکہ حضرت عمر رضی اللہ عنہ عدی کی اولاد میں سے ہیں۔

ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (Arabic: عمر بن الخطاب, also spelled Omar, c. 583/584 – 644) was the second Rashidun caliph, ruling from August 634 until his assassination in 644. He succeeded Abu Bakr (r. 632–634) as the second caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate on 23 August 634. Umar was a senior companion and father-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He was also an expert Muslim jurist known for his pious and just nature, which earned him the epithet al-Farooq ("the one who distinguishes (between right and wrong)").

Umar initially opposed Muhammad, his distant Qurayshite kinsman and later son-in-law. Following his conversion to Islam in 616, he became the first Muslim to openly pray at the Kaaba. Umar participated in almost all battles and expeditions under Muhammad, who bestowed the title al-Faruq ('the Distinguisher') upon Umar, for his judgements. After Muhammad's death in June 632, Umar pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr (r. 632–634) as the first caliph and served as the closest adviser to the latter until August 634, when the dying Abu Bakr nominated Umar as his successor.
