Fireworks play a very major role on our environment and culture. Many cultures use fireworks to celebrate various holidays, however the chemicals used in fireworks and pyrotechnics can have negative effects on our environment. This paper will give a brief history and evolution of firework and discusses the various pros and cons on many aspects of the field of pyrotechnics. This paper will also discuss the wide variety of chemicals used in pyrotechnics.

Fireworks originated in the 6th century China. The Chinese perfected the art of making rockets and explosives with primitive gunpowder. The Mongols were believed to have introduced gunpowder to Europe in 1241 AD (Encarta, fireworks) Europe progressed faster than China in the development of fireworks. These fireworks were made by experienced military workers called fire makers. These fire makers also made gunpowder and lead shot for cannons. By the mid 17th century fireworks were widely used for entertainment at resorts and public gardens in Europe
