According to the Shimla Agreement 1972, LOC was to be drawn eastwards from Point NJ 9842 but there was no Ground Survey Done because of the inhospitality and inaccessibility of the Terrain so it stayed un-demarcated & both parties agreed to keep it demilitarized. 1983 It revealed that India Intruded into the Glacier violating the Shimla Accord 1972 so Pakistan Started preparation to defend it. In 1984 India Launched Operation Meghdoot establishing their positions at unoccupied & empty mountain passes and Occupying the region east of the Saltoro Ridge Including the main Siachen Glacier.

They were stopped at the eastern slope of Saltoro Ridge but because of the Toughest Terrain, it's nearly impossible to dislodge anyone who attains a stable defending Position. There have been many fights after that but ground position is yet to change.
