Wednesday Mindset Motivation: Habit #3 Put First Things First
Happy Wednesday! Today we’re going to do Wednesday’s Mindset Motivation.
Habit Number 3 from “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey states to “Put First Things First.”
What this means is fairly simple: prioritize the most important things in life over the things that don’t matter as much. This seems like a very straightforward concept but the reality is, the most important things in life often take the most work to maintain. As creatures with an inherent flaw of laziness, we will simetimes trick ourselves into believing prioritizing the less important things in life won’t have bad consequences. So, how do you train yourself to prioritize the most important things in your life? Here’s 3 easy steps to get started:
1. List out the top 20 values that are most important to you (think “respect” as a value) and narrow the list down until just the top 3 most important values are left. This will help you in the next steps.
2. List out your personal and professional goals for every area of your life: family, business, career, finances, relationships, spiritual beliefs, etc.
3. List out the individual steps you will need to take to accomplish each of these goals.
This list may take you several days to complete, and that’s ok. Once it is done, you will have a comprehensive list of the things that matter the MOST to you in life, and you will now know exactly what to prioritize over everything else.
While instituting these changes, don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to change everything in your life all at once. Start in a manageable area of your life and implement small changes there, and then move onto the next area when you’re ready.
