Restorying the Bridal Chamber

The theological promise of marriage drives many into this tension-filled bridal chamber despite the overwhelming evidence that many suffer, rather than find bliss, in this mystical union. Despite a downward shift in marital trends, the mystery of the bridal chamber, and its spiritual promise, continues to draw us into it, as we struggle to give language to this poorly understood sacrament.

This paper flushes out historic social and cultural trends that influence meanings we give to the bridal chamber. By deconstructing it religiously, politically, and social-economically, restorying the bridal chamber becomes possible3. This paper contends that a downward shift in marital trends is a result of human beings’ difficulty with finding reasonable explanations for building themselves into a new marital paradigm. In addition, this paper addresses reasons for this difficulty and puts forth ideas and concepts that translate into resources for coping with the realities of today’s bridal chamber.

Educational Objectives:
1) Examine historic, social and cultural trends that influence meanings we give to the bridal chamber.
2) To explore reasons for the difficulty in finding meaning in the bridal chamber.
3) Explore ideas and concepts that translate into resources for coping with the realities of today’s bridal chamber.
