Apollo 13 was the third crewed mission intended to land on the Moon. Launched on April 11, 1970, it had to be aborted after an oxygen tank exploded in the service module, causing a critical failure of the spacecraft's systems. Despite not landing on the Moon, the crew – consisting of James A. Lovell Jr., John L. Swigert Jr., and Fred W. Haise Jr. – did loop around it. This trajectory allowed the astronauts to view and photograph the lunar surface, especially its far side which is not visible from Earth. The images and observations made during this close flyby provided valuable information despite the mission's challenges. The crew safely returned to Earth on April 17, 1970, demonstrating the effectiveness of NASA's problem-solving skills and the resilience of the astronauts.
