Robert McCall is at home in southern Italy, but he soon realizes that his friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As the events become increasingly dangerous, McCall understands what he must do: take on the role of protector for his friends by challenging the mafia. Since leaving behind his life as a government assassin, Robert McCall (played by Denzel Washington) struggles to come to terms with the terrible actions he has committed in the past. He finds a certain comfort in seeking justice on behalf of the oppressed. Feeling surprisingly at ease in southern Italy, he discovers that his new friends are under the control of local crime leaders. As the events turn deadly, McCall knows his duty: to protect his friends by confronting the mafia.
