Japan's government is taking action in response to the alarming surge in adverse effects reported among young people using technically legal drugs.
Health ministry officials have confirmed that some of these substances are even more harmful than certain substances, leading to their classification as illegal "dangerous drugs."
Concerned about the potential for more cases, the ministry is actively investigating sellers who market these products as "legal alternatives."
The government is planning to convene a meeting later this month to formalize a comprehensive strategy for addressing this issue, particularly concerning substances sold online and in stores.
Between March and June of this year, nine individuals who consumed these products experienced disordered consciousness and convulsions, with eight requiring hospitalization.
In response, the ministry conducted on-the-spot inspections of three stores in Kanagawa, Osaka, and Tokushima prefectures, ordering them to cease sales of these technically legal substances.
Japanese law regulates certain compounds, but the detected harmful substance was a modified form with a chemical structure exempt from legal controls.
