“THEY’RE HOPES WERE TO KILL ME, TO GET ME. I’VE BEEN NEAR DEATH 3 TIMES IN BIRMINGHAM.”

On May 18, 1961, CBS aired this interview of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, one of the founders of the Southern Christian Leadership and a man that they described as “The Negro most feared by the YT citizens of Birmingham.” In this clip, Shuttlesworth was termed “militant” even though he, like Dr. King, utilized a non-violent strategy. I guess, for racists clinging to stolen and hoarded wealth, consistently confronting their racism and theft is such an attack on them that they can only equate it with military action. Their description of Shuttlesworth as being “feared” shows how saturated the reporters were in their own colonizer viewpoint. Shuttlesworth had never attacked anyone YT, but he had been attacked and almost killed by a violent YT mob. Shuttlesworth had never tried to assassinate YT people, but his home was bombed multiple times. Shuttlesworth had never done anything truly scary at all. All he did was tell the truth. For a people desparate to cling to their lies, I guess this was scary enough.

Fred Shuttlesworth was instrumental in the Civil Rights Movement as one of the Big Three. He was fearless in the face of death and refused to back down no matter how much violence was thrown at him. Rev. Shuttlesworth transitioned to be with the ancestors in 2011 at the age of 89. #RestInPeaceAndPowerKing.
