Let’s talk about kids and biting dogs.

in order to have them cohabitate successfully, BOTH need boundaries.

Cora (the dog in the video) is a known biting dog. Prior to training shed chase down house guests and attack them, and she’s overall a nervous + flighty dog.

We’ve gotten her to the point where she’s capable of ignoring people and being neutral, but it would be extremely unfair to allow a child to reach out and pet her while she’s rested and in command.

She has no options and nowhere to go if she was uncomfortable, which makes for a sketchy situation which could absolutely lead to another bite.

Just because cora is being rehabbed, doesn’t mean she’s incapable of NEVER biting again.

That’s a false sense of security to believe that.

But what we’ve done is given her impulse control, so she can now just do what she’s told rather than chase people down and make poor decisions without any direction in her life.

If she’s uncomfortable, we’ve taught her to move away on her own.

We’ve patterned a LOT of really good behavior, but it still takes a lot of repetition for it to stick.

And there is a balance of what’s fair and what’s not., especially in the very beginning of the process.

Cora needs success. She needs to learn she’s advocated for but also being held HIGHLY accountable for her actions.

By getting her to exist, that’s the first step in the process.

And by teaching kids how to exist with dogs, that’s a safety measure across ALL boards.

Whether a dog is aggressive or not, most dogs only put up with so much. So it’s important to educate kids on their behavior around dogs as well.
