Akkad served as the capital of the Akkadian Empire,
which existed from 2334 to 2218 BCE. This empire,
established by Sargon the Great who reigned from
2334-2279 BCE, holds the distinction of being the world's
first multinational political entity. Sargon's rule not only
unified Mesopotamia but also set a precedent that
subsequent Mesopotamian rulers aimed to emulate or
surpass. The Akkadian Empire introduced several
groundbreaking concepts that later became
commonplace.
The precise location, rise, and fall of the city of Akkad
remain shrouded in mystery. However, it was
undoubtedly a pivotal city within the expansive region of
ancient Mesopotamia. Akkad, sometimes referred to as
Agade, is believed to have been situated along the
western bank of the Euphrates River. lts specific location
might have been between Sippar and Kish, Mari and
Babylon, or somewhere else along the Euphrates.
