India was the first country to discover water on the moon in 2008, through its Chandrayaan-1 mission. The mission's Moon Impact Probe (MIP) was deliberately crashed into the lunar surface near the south pole, and the resulting debris was analyzed for the presence of water ice. The MIP found evidence of water molecules in the debris, as well as hydroxyl (hydrogen and oxygen) molecules.
