Why Mayor Ted Wheeler Wants 96 State Troopers in Downtown Portland

Portland's own Mayor Ted Wheeler, once the darling of anti-police rhetoric and de-funding movements, is now requesting 96 Oregon State Troopers to safeguard Downtown Portland from a wave of "unprovoked and random stabbings" and other violent incidents. Ah, it appears that the progressive fantasy of replacing law and order with rainbow-colored hugs didn't work as planned. The good Mayor, who stood in solidarity with groups openly hostile to law enforcement, now acknowledges a need for "reimagining" the safety strategy. In the words of many conservative sages, "actions have consequences." Perhaps the dilemma isn't the police but rather the drug-induced, mentally unstable individuals running around with blades. Maybe, just maybe, dismantling law enforcement without a concrete plan was a reckless idea that is now costing lives and destroying a community.

State troopers in Downtown Portland? That's one for the history books. However, Mayor Ted isn't the only one scrambling. The Portland Police Bureau, already grappling with low staff numbers, might have to resort to double overtime to meet "minimum staffing requirements." Meanwhile, Portland's city council plays a never-ending game of "rethinking" and "reimagining" solutions that sound strikingly like stale reruns of failed initiatives. But don't worry, the Mayor's office reassures us that a task force will look into it. Not to rush anyone, but when you've got a lunatic slashing through the streets, time might just be of the essence.
