Democratic Governor Tim Walz has signed a universal school meals bill into law, granting free breakfast and lunch to all K-12 students, regardless of their parents' income in Minnesota. Walz emphasized the importance of this investment in lowering costs, supporting working families, and caring for young learners. The bill requires schools to enroll in the federal program for free and reduced-price meals, with the state covering the cost difference estimated to be $388 million over the next two years. This initiative aims to address the issue of food insecurity, as one in four children who are food-insecure do not qualify for federal support. The program is expected to be operational by summer school in July, aligning Minnesota with states like California, Maine, and Colorado that have implemented similar measures to provide universal school meals.
