Niger: Tension Mounts Between Niger Authorities And France

The regime's spokesman, Major Colonel Amadou Abdramane, denounced the remarks made on Monday by French President Emmanuel Macron, saying they constituted a "blatant additional interference in Niger's internal affairs".

In a statement read on national television, he claimed that the "relentless efforts" of M. Macron “in favor of an invasion of Niger aims to perpetuate a neocolonialist enterprise on the Nigerian people”.

This diplomatic scandal arose since August 3, when the new Nigerian leaders had reported several military agreements with France.

The agreements all contained different notices for their effective end, one of which, relating to a 2012 agreement, was a month-long, according to the military.

On Friday, thousands of people massed outside the Nigeriene Air Force base that houses French forces in the capital.

Emmanuel Macron on his behalf reiterated that the military had "no legitimacy" and that France would not make decisions on Niger only "based on exchanges with President Bazoum", whom he hailed "commitment, action and courage".

The immunity and diplomatic visa of the French ambassador to Niger have been withdrawn from him and authorities notified Paris on Tuesday of their intention to expel him.

Last Friday, they had in the first place allowed 48H to Sylvain Itté to leave the territory, an ultimatum rejected by Paris.

Niger has since been under sanctions and under threat of military intervention by the CEDEAO, following the coup d'état that occurred on July 26.
