The Passive Seismic Experiment was the first seismometer placed on the Moon’s surface. It detected lunar “moonquakes” and provided information about the internal structure of the Moon2.

The Apollo missions conducted many experiments on the moon. The experiments included both on the surface of the Moon and while in orbit. Experimenting in orbit helped determine things such as the composition of the lunar surface, but required special tools². The Apollo 11 crew performed many experiments on the lunar surface. And the results were either radioed back to Earth by the crew or returned to Earth for laboratory analysis³. The Passive Seismic Experiment was the first seismometer placed on the Moon’s surface. It detected lunar "moonquakes" and provided information about the internal structure of the Moon⁴.
