IGN Anti-Xbox Bias EXPOSED?!: Starfield Review 7/10

Insiders and reviewers received an early copy to review the game, and IGN has now come out with a controversial review. Stapleton from IGN had a mixed experience with Starfield, praising its expansive universe but finding fault in several gameplay elements.

He found the initial hours challenging due to a lack of guidance on the game’s complex systems, describing it as “pretty rough going.” The inventory management system was criticized for being a “step backward from Fallout 4,” making it cumbersome to manage items between containers.

Starfield is arguably the biggest game of the year in terms of anticipation from fans and ambition from Bethesda. It is free on Xbox Game Pass starting September 6th, but you can play right now if you’re willing to pay extra for early access. While most reviews are extremely positive with the game sitting pretty at 87 on Metacritic, some fans are critical of the IGN review.

Dan Stapleton’s review wasn’t all negative; he found ship-to-ship battles entertaining enough, even if they were simple. Players can divert energy between weapons, engines, and shields, although Stapleton never needed to utilize this feature.

Despite these criticisms, he did recommend the game, stating that it eventually becomes engaging, particularly with its interstellar mystery story. This review is by an industry veteran of 19 years and an insider, one of the selected few to have tried the game so far. It did not sit well with some fans, who considered the review biased.

Funnily enough, this IGN review score is also lower than verdicts from IGN in other countries. IGN Spain gave Starfield a 10/10, as did IGN Japan, meanwhile, IGN Brasil reached a 9.5.

IGN’s review of Starfield is far from terrible. The reviewer, Dan Stapleton, says he recommends the game, despite forces working against it such as ‘the combination of disjointed space travel, nonexistent maps, aggravating inventory management, and a slow rollout of essential abilities’. He also praised the ‘interstellar mystery story,’ and he enjoyed it so much that he returned for seconds in new game+ after 60 hours.
