On Tuesday, Rep. Steve Scalise, the second-ranking House Republican, disclosed that he has received a diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, and is currently undergoing treatment.

At the age of 57, Scalise affirmed his commitment to continue serving in the House of Representatives. He characterized the cancer as “highly treatable” and emphasized that it was detected at an early stage.

Notably, the Louisiana Republican was one of the individuals wounded in 2017 during a shooting incident on a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, near Washington, where a gunman with a rifle targeted lawmakers, the Associated Press reported.
