Mary Ellen Wilson was an orphan who was abused and neglected by her foster parents. In 1874, she was rescued by a New York City missionary and lawyer, Etta Wheeler, who decided to take legal action against the foster family. With the help of Henry Bergh, the founder of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Wheeler filed the first case of child abuse in the United States. The court found the foster family guilty and Mary Ellen was placed into the care of a new foster family. The case was instrumental in the creation of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and laid the foundation for modern child protection laws.
