You have to suppress before you can counter condition

Suppressing a behavior isn’t a bad thing. In order to properly counter-condition a better behavior, you have to stop the unwanted behavior! If your dog is still rehearsing the unwanted behavior, how receptive are they going to be to you offering them another behavior? Additionally, how will they understand that the unwanted behavior they are rehearsing is even wrong? Without suppressing it, they will continue to go back to rehearsing the behavior they know is comfortable and that works. So yes, we do suppress behavior, but our work doesn’t stop there. We suppress the unwanted behaviors so that we can SUCCESSFULLY counter-condition better ones.
