The meaning of women’s experience in theological and psychological contexts

Religion and psychotherapy are best described in cultural forms. Religious faith and psychotherapy that represent and celebrate female cultural forms such as conception, birth, childhood, adolescence, and female festivals may provide a more nuanced context conducive to attaching meaning to women’s lives. The specificity of female psychology and theology and their symbolic realizations must be taken into account in order for the emergence of contextualized meaning to occur in a woman’s psychological and faith life.

The theological and psychological meaning of a woman's experience may emerge in the following manner. First, a localized interest in women is called for. A woman may discover her own subjectivity, apart from all the years of patriarchal interpretation of her experience, in her own particular, contextualized frame of reference.

Second, the articulation of women's experience in psychotherapeutic and religious experience may be formed by the replacement of a meta-narrative with indiviudual narratives. Women's discourse is a vehicle for the development of a collective history and a subjective reality. A language must be given to the intrasubjective and corporeal experiences of women left unarticulated by culture of yesterday.

Educational Objectives: 1) To incorporate female psychology and theology in order for the emergence of contextualized meaning to occur in a woman’s psychological and faith life. 2) To present the thesis that the articulation of women's experience in psychotherapeutic and religious experience may be formed by replacing of a meta-narrative with individual narratives. 3) To illustrate that women's discourse is a vehicle for the development of a collective history and a subjective reality.
