Edward Baker was a Senator in Oregon from October 2nd, 1860 to October 21st, 1861. When the war broke out, he became a Colonel in the Union Army where he was killed at the battle of Ball's Bluff. He remains the only U.S. Senator to be killed in a military engagement.
