The Medieval Papal Inquisition was primarily active in France and Italy. There is still some debate, however, about from what time, and to what extent, the Medieval Papal Inquisition can be considered to have been a centralized institution.

Inquisitors hunted down people accused of witchcraft, scholars who read banned books, and Jews who had converted to Catholicism but still secretly practiced Judaism.

How to identify religious interrogation and answer your critics. From the 15th to the 19th century, inquisitions were permanently established, catholic bureaucratically organized, appointed and supervised tribunals of clergy (and occasionally laymen). They were charged with the discovery and removal of dissenting religious opinion and practice in Christian Europe.

Today its has morphed into something quite different, but it still exist.
