The 1996 Presidential election cycle featured incumbent President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, and Senator Bob Dole of Kansas, the Republican nominee. The first debate featured a 90-minute discussion with the topics selected by the moderator, with candidates questioned in-turn, followed by a rebuttal and a response. Moderated by Jim Lehrer of PBS, it took place on October 6, 1996, in Hartford, Connecticut.
