The Moon, Earth's natural satellite, is about 1/6th the size of Earth. It has a rocky surface covered in craters, mountains, valleys, and vast plains called maria, which were formed by ancient volcanic activity. The Moon lacks a significant atmosphere and water, resulting in extreme temperature variations between its day and night. NASA has conducted several missions to explore the Moon, including the Apollo missions that brought astronauts to its surface between 1969 and 1972.
