The storm rapidly intensified into a hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.
Idalia was forecasted to make landfall in the Big Bend area, north of Tampa, around 7:30 a.m. ET.
The system was expected to bring extreme winds over 100 miles per hour and the potential for death and catastrophic devastation.
Idalia was also expected to produce life-threatening storm surge inundation and hurricane conditions along parts of the Florida Gulf Coast.
Prior to reaching Florida, Idalia brought powerful wind and rain to western Cuba.
