Liquid Ping Pong in Space - RED 4K
3
Astronaut Scott Kelly showed off a fascinating feature of life in microgravity by playing water ping-pong with two hydrophobic paddles.
The paddles are made of polycarbonate and have a laser-etched surface with 300 micrometer posts. They are then spray coated with Teflon to create a super-hydrophobic surface that prevents water from sticking.
The larger the water drop, the less force it takes to break it up. The smaller the drop, the harder you can hit it.
Kelly is demonstrating with a 4 mL drop, which is over 100 times larger than a raindrop.
