how to play Rich Men North Of Richmond - Oliver Anthony no capo guitar vocal lesson 432hz

This here is how you might play Rich Men N. Of Richmond without a capo.
Obviously Oliver Anthony uses a capo on this song. So this is a barre chord alternative for people who don’t use capos.

the whole song is Dm, Bb, F and C

...here’s a quick finger placement if you need it, then we’ll get right down to singing and playing the song...
Also, if you’re not in tune with me there’s a tuning reference at the last 30 seconds of this lesson... In which case, tune up and come back to this section.
We have Dm - Bb - F - C

I also have a free PDF of this song chart. I’ll put the link in the description below.

Oliver Anthony’s intro starts with vocals before he starts playing his guitar. In order to do this, you may need a reference pitch. You can quietly run through the chord progression, or just play the last chord softly.
INTRO I've been Dm sellin' my soul,
Bb Workin' all day
F Overtime hours for
C bullshit pay
The nice thing about this intro is you only have to strum each chord once...
I've been Dm sellin' my soul,
Bb Workin' all day
F Overtime hours for
C bullshit pay

next we slightly build up by adding an extra note or two to each chord...
So I can sit out here and waste my life away
Drag back home and drown my troubles away

Then for the pre-chorus you can start adding some rhythm...
Dm It's a damn shame
Bb What the world's gotten to
this is an alternative to using a capo, so it’s near impossible to pick all the same notes that Oliver Anthony plays...
I just play the low note of the chord for the first beat, then upstroke the full chord followed by a downstroke... We’ll refer to this later as the triplet rhythm
PRE Dm It's a damn shame
Bb What the world's gotten to
F For people like me and
C people like you
Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
But it is, oh, it is

Then going into the chorus, play a very basic rhythm. I do the bass note followed by an upstroke

CH. Livin' in the new world
With an old soul

for the next line you can go back to the triplet rhythm for each chord...
These rich men north of Richmond
Lord knows they all
just wanna have total control
Wanna know what you think
Wanna know what you do
And they don't think you know
But I know that you do
'Cause your dollar ain't shit
And it's taxed to no end
'Cause of ri-ch men north of Ri-chmond

Instrumental break

for the next verse we start with single chords again and build up...
VS. I wish politicians would look out for miners
And not just minors on an island somewhere
Lord, we got folks in the street

here we’re back to the triplet rhythm...
Lord, we got folks in the street
Ain't got nothin' to eat
And the obese milkin' welfare
Well, God, if you're 5-foot-3 and you're 300 pounds
Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds - Young men are puttin' themselves six feet in the ground -

Back to a single strum...
'Cause all this damn country does is keep on kickin' them down

There’s a pause here after that single C chord, then right back into the triplet rhythm for the pre-chorus...
REPEAT PRE CH
Lord It's a damn shame
What the world's gotten to
For people like me and
people like you
Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
But it is, oh, it is

Livin' in the new world
With an old soul

for the next line you can go back to the triplet rhythm for each chord...
These rich men north of Richmond
Lord knows they all
just wanna have total control

back to a single strum...
Wanna know what you think
Wanna know what you do
And they don't think you know
But I know that you do
'Cause your dollar ain't shit

triplet rhythm
And it's taxed to no end
'Cause of ri-ch men north of Ri-chmond

instrumental 2x

OUTRO I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day
Overtime hours for bullshit pay...

There you have it. Rich Men North Of Richmond without a capo. Have fun with it, and I hope to see you back here again.

Like many other guitarists I tune to 432hz. There are a lot of theories, but I’ll just tell you that it is a much more natural frequency than 440. Therefore, it is easier for many people to sing along to earth’s natural frequency of 432hz.
Here’s a reference for the 1st or High E...
B - G - D - A - E
