College Football Week 1: The Games to Watch

The 2023 college football season is finally here and now that Week 0 is behind us, it's time to truly kick off the college football season. Here are a few games to watch in Week 1. Here are the games we cover in this episode:

1. NC State Wolfpack @ Connecticut Huskies (9:00 PM ET CBSSN)

Quarterback Brennan Armstrong will get his first chance to take advantage of a reunion with his old offensive coordinator when NC State faces UConn on Thursday in East Hartford, Conn., in the season opener for both teams.

2. Nebraska Cornhuskers @ Minnesota Golden Gophers (8:00 PM ET, FOX)

Matt Rhule is Nebraska's fourth full-time head coach in the past decade, taking over for Scott Frost. Nebraska is coming off a 4-8 season in 2022, one in which it lost five games by one score. They visit Minnesota to open the 2023 season in a Big Ten Conference game in Minneapolis.

3. Southern Utah Thunderbirds @ Arizona State Sun Devils (10:00 PM ET, PAC 12 Network)

Arizona State first-year coach Kenny Dillingham has to prepare for Thursday's season opener against Southern Utah in Tempe, Arizona while trying to keep his players focused and ready for a season that will not end with a bowl appearance after a self imposed Bowl ban. Arizona State brought in 51 new players, 31 of them transfers, ahead of this season.

4. Ball State Cardinals @ Kentucky Wildcats (12:00 PM ET, SEC Network)

For the second straight season, Ball State is opening the year by traveling to an SEC stadium. Last fall they fell 59-10 to Tennessee. Now they will travel to Kroger Field and take on the Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky put together an 8-5-0 ATS record last year and didn't fare well as big favorites.

5. Fresno State Bulldogs @ Purdue Boilermakers (12:00 PM ET, BIG TEN Network)

Purdue kicks off their season with Fresno State coming to town and this will be the start of a new era for the Boilermakers. = Purdue hired Ryan Walters as the head coach from Illinois where he was a Defensive Coordinator for the past two years. The Boilermakers’ hire is significant because the last time a Defensive Coordinator was hired as Purdue’s HC was in 1982. For Fresno State, the Bulldogs reload with talent on both sides of the ball and plenty of transfers coming to a team that won the Mountain West Conference in 2022 after starting 1-4 and rattling off nine straight wins.

6. Virginia Cavaliers @ Tennessee Volunteers(12:00 PM ET, ABC)

The Virginia Cavaliers and the Tennessee Volunteers open the regular season on Saturday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. Virginia heads into the 2023 season with a lot of new faces, including QB Tony Muskett, a transfer from FCS Monmouth. The team not only has a new signal caller, but the top 4 wideouts are gone, too. Tennessee begins a new era in pretty good shape with QB Joe Milton III. Wideouts Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman are gone to the NFL, but there are still plenty of downfield threats available.

In addition to the games mentioned above, here are some other things to keep an eye on in Week 1:

The weather: The weather could still be a factor in some of the games in Week 1. There is a chance of rain in some areas, so it will be important for teams to be prepared for any kind of conditions.

Overall, there is a lot to be excited about in college football week 1. With so many great matchups and storylines, it's sure to be an exciting start to the season.
