Seattle Homeless Encampment Fire: Individual with Prior Convictions Released Without Charges

Seattle's infamous Mercer Street homeless encampment, an area wedged between a major on-ramp and numerous bustling apartment complexes, faced devastation when a massive fire was set off by Paris El Cantera Alcantara, a repeat offender with a criminal record dating back to 1998. Onlookers might have debated whether the fire was the result of a misplaced vanilla or pumpkin spice candle, but Alcantara's cheeky defense of knocking over a candle didn't prevent the realization that the city's system is clearly broken. Caught red-handed, one might expect swift justice. Yet, despite admitting to the act, he was released without charges. With Seattle officials turning a blind eye to the encampment's criminal activities for years, citizens can't help but wonder if the city's approach to such camps is more laissez-faire than leadership.
