The Sun is the source of life on Earth, but it also poses many threats to our planet and civilization. Solar storms, flares, and coronal mass ejections can disrupt communication systems, damage satellites, and endanger astronauts. To understand and predict these phenomena, we need to observe the Sun in high resolution and multiple wavelengths.

That is the mission of the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a NASA spacecraft that was launched in 2010 and has been monitoring the Sun ever since. SDO is equipped with three instruments that provide us with stunning images and data of the solar atmosphere, magnetic fields, and helioseismology.

The Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) captures the Sun in 10 different wavelengths of ultraviolet light, each corresponding to a different temperature and layer of the Sun. The AIA images reveal the dynamic and complex nature of the solar plasma, from the photosphere to the corona.

The Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) measures the Sun’s magnetic field and sound waves that propagate through the solar interior. The HMI data help us understand how the Sun’s magnetic field is generated and how it affects the solar activity.

The Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE) measures the Sun’s extreme ultraviolet irradiance, which is a major source of energy for Earth’s upper atmosphere. The EVE data show how the Sun’s output varies over time and space, and how it influences our climate and space weather.
