BREAKDOWN At Sea - Can We Make Repairs While Sailing? - Atlantic Crossing Part 5 [Ep. 47]

We have a MAJOR problem! While we try to fix one problem, another rears its head, and then another. If we can't fix it, we may need to TURN BACK?

We are sailing in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and need to make some major repairs. Are we prepared for this? We face the proposition of continuing our Atlantic Crossing by sailing almost 2000 miles without a motor or turning around.

We have clogged fuel filters in our Yanmar engine from bad diesel fuel in Sint Maarten or Grenada. We aren't 100% sure where we got it from. We fix out fuel filters, but in the meantime, we burn out our starter motor. Our engine is now dead at sea with no way to re-start it.

The spare we have onboard looks completely different than the one we removed. We contact our patrons via sat phone to do some more digging. Will we get back up and running?

Meanwhile, while sailing, Kate is sewing up our spinnaker sock as we ripped it the day before. Roxy the sailing dog is very chill through the whole process.

Thankfully offshore sailing requires a prepper type mindset. We aren't preparing for the end of the world, but we do want to ensure our tiny home systems will work off the grid in the remote wilderness of the middle of the ocean. We are on our own, we can't call the police for help, there are no first responders, there is no internet for DIY how to videos. For this reason we carry a lot of spare parts. Sadly, this experience is not a scary Halloween prank, it's the real deal.

So who is this crazy sailing couple?

We are trying to sail around the world, West About, via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good hope.

Unlike some of the other new sailing channels, we are not just some hot bodies or sexy girls in bathing suits that don't know how to sail. We are experienced racing sailors that know how to get the best performance out of a boat, navigate in extreme conditions, and have lots of fun! So, we hope we don't have too many boat fails and keep it all about a beautiful sailboat sailing at her best!

This isn’t a Captain Ron movie, it’s the real deal. If it’s gonna happen, it will happen out there! Join us as we keep on trucking across the Atlantic, from St. Maarten to the Azores in this leg of our around the world circumnavigation.

We quit our jobs and launched our boat in July of 2019 and have sailed over 7,000 miles so far crossing oceans.

This relaxing video has us sailing in the Atlantic ocean, during our transatlantic voyage. Our weather routing has us making a straight shot, rather than over the top of low pressure systems via Bermuda. This is unconventional, but so is our trip.

Our route will continue to take us in the Portuguese trades, to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, then on to Argentina, Chile, Cape Horn, and Patagonia. This is where we really want to sail away to and escape into the purity of nature. We hope to get there, but this trip is not easy.

Like you, before we left we also watched the inspiring videos of s/v Delos, Sailing La Vagabonde, Project Atticus, and Gone with the Wynns to name a few. We have to take a moment to thank those that have gone before, and we hope that we can inspire you like we were. We learned a lot about living off the grid in a tiny hope from their and other YouTube videos. We are happy you are watching ours.

So, grab your coffee and sail across the ocean along with us as we conquer our biggest fear, the unknown of what lies ahead in our voyage. Welcome aboard!

Oh, and despite what the marketing says....you don't need a catamaran or multihull to go sailing and they are not all as fast as you think (they are nice and some good ones are fast, they are great party boats though and we love it when our friends have one!!!! ;-)
