Why You Are Having Trouble Paying Attention

The present era is marked by a battle for attention, fought by tech companies, advertisers, and marketers, leveraging extensive user data to captivate our gaze. The average adult attention span has significantly shrunk by 33% to 8 seconds since 2000. A multitude of factors contribute to this issue: smartphones, video games, and the impact of contemporary lifestyle norms.

Smartphones are notorious attention-magnets, with adults erroneously assuming they check their phones 25 times a day, whereas in reality, it is thrice as much. Notification bombardment from numerous apps and the FOMO sensation compels us to interact more with our phones, often inducing a dopamine surge.

While video games can improve sensorimotor skills and decision-making abilities, they also have a downside. Casual games on smartphones, often lacking in engagement, pose a risk of becoming a time-consuming obsession, especially with live service elements.

Johann Hari, in his book Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention, argues that our diet, lifestyle, and sleep patterns, in addition to smartphones and video games, contribute to our dwindling attention spans.

Our hectic lives, filled with overstimulation, excessive work, and insufficient rest, create an environment conducive to attention deficit. We're trying to utilize every spare moment, making it a societal, not individual, issue. To overcome this challenge, it's essential to remember that it's not entirely your fault, and many others are grappling with the same problem.
