Sea of Stars is a masterful creation by Sabotage Studio, a once unknown name that took the gaming world by storm with its innovative action platformer, The Messenger. Building on that success, they embarked on their dream project, a retro-inspired JRPG called Sea of Stars. Set in a world shared with The Messenger, but millennia earlier, players embark on an epic journey to thwart the apocalypse planned by the evil god, The Fleshmancer. The game expertly blends a well-crafted narrative with strategic combat, engaging exploration, and memorable characters, especially the dual protagonists, Zale and Valere. Though reminiscent of classic SNES JRPGs, Sea of Stars brings its own innovations, like an interactable world, dynamic battles, and a party leveling system that ensures all characters are battle-ready. Additionally, the 'Wheels' minigame offers a fun, strategic diversion. Visuals and audio are top-notch, with detailed sprite work, dynamic lighting, and a superb soundtrack by Eric Brown (Rainbowdragoneyes) and contributions from Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda. Despite minor pacing issues, Sea of Stars stands as a sensational achievement, an instant classic, and a must-play for fans of old-school RPGs and newcomers alike.
