3. **Protection of Cardinal Colonna:** After arriving in Rome, St. Joseph Calasanz was taken under the protection of Cardinal Marcoantonio Colonna and became the cardinal's theologian.

4. **Charity Work:** Following a flood in 1598, St. Joseph Calasanz dedicated himself to charitable works, helping the destitute and homeless.

5. **Foundation of "Pious Schools":** In 1600, St. Joseph Calasanz opened his first "Pious School" in Rome, offering free education to poor children. This marked the beginning of the Piarists, also known as the Order of the Pious Schools.

6. **Growth and Miracles:** Over 41 years, St. Joseph Calasanz led the Piarists with patience and humility, performing miracles, receiving visits from the Blessed Virgin Mary and Infant Jesus, and demonstrating gifts of reading consciences and prophecy.

7. **Trials and Expulsion:** The Piarists' internal discord and external persecution led to the expulsion of St. Joseph Calasanz from the Order he founded in 1643.

8. **Suppression and Consolation:** In 1646, the Piarists were suppressed by the Holy See. Despite the challenges, St. Joseph Calasanz received consolation through visions of Our Lord, who assured him of the future revival of his Congregation.

9. **Death and Legacy:** St. Joseph Calasanz passed away on August 25, 1648, at the age of 91. A century later, Pope Alexander VII cleared the name of the Pious Schools and restored St. Joseph Calasanz's work.
