What's the mast crop like in your area? Light, medium, or is it a heavy mast crop this year? While scouting I found an abundance of red and chestnut oak acorns! This is good and bad. It means that bucks will have plenty of acorns to eat in preparation for the rut. But when there are a lot of trees producing, it makes it difficult to determine which ones that the bucks are using. Here's a tip, when you scout find the oak trees that have the most tracks and droppings around. If bucks and does are feeding there you will find the area with deer droppings. Also, when bucks start rubbing trees, you may find rub sign near the trees that they are eating the acorns off of. If you don't have time to hit the woods and scout, call your state deer biologist and ask them. Typically a mast crop survey is conducted every year. Take this information and use it to your advantage! And, good luck in getting your buck!
