Where are African lions found?
9
African lions used to be spread across most of the continent, but now are only found in sub-Saharan Africa, with 80% in eastern or southern Africa. Three of the five largest populations are in Tanzania. Lions have disappeared from 12 sub-Saharan countries in recent decades.
Only about 24,000 wild lions remain in Africa. We have no estimates of their former numbers, but it is likely that there were at least many hundreds of thousands before European settlers arrived.
A very large wild lion in Africa was observed in Kenya near Mount Kenya. This male African lion was 11 feet long and weighed an incredible 600 pounds
