Potty training… the Montessori way: Toilet Learning

Here are some Montessori gentle parenting tips for toilet learning (potty training)

🌸 Never scold your child. Make this a positive experience!

🍁 Simply state in a neutral tone, “Urine goes in the potty/toilet.”

🌿 Use correct terminology. A potty is a portable pot used for eliminating. A toilet is connected to a plumbing system. Refer to body parts using correct words.

🌻 Be patient. Take it one step at a time. Celebrate any successes and gradually get your child comfortable with using a potty. Just sitting on the potty is a success. It will take time to learn to release urine into the bowl.

🌵Once your child has shown signs of readiness, transition to wearing training underwear. Use underwear that aren’t too loose on the thighs so bowel movements are held in well. You can still use pull-ups in the car seat or during sleep.

🌲Be proactive. Invite your child to sit and try throughout the day. At first, set a timer and try every hour.

🌾 Make it fun! Read books about using a toilet or potty. Give your child fidget toys. Sing songs. Listen to music.

🌳 Do not force. Never make this a negative experience. You do not want to get into a power struggle about this. It will hinder your progress. Just be patient and positive and try again later.
