Last year around same time, #VAB planned to visit and show the real beauty of Oman. Mutrah Souq being one of the oldest traditional Souqs (marketplaces) in the Arab world, having a history stretching back over 200 years, was on top of our list.

Unfortunately right after we recorded this video the lockdowns started & that's why we held the video, thinking that we will post once life is back to normal, which is taking way more time than we ever predicted. Our team decided to post this video now and let everyone have a look of 'how life was before Covid19'

A Traditional Market In Muscat that has earned acclaim throughout Oman for its varied array of both local and imported goods – thanks in large part to its strategic position at the mouth of Muscat Harbor. Known locally as the Al Dhalam souq, which translates as ‘Darkness’ in Arabic, #MutrahSouq takes its name from the network of narrow streets that run between Khour Bimba and the Al Lawatiya Mosque, where the stalls are so cramped together the sunlight can’t make it through the cracks.

Navigating the dimly lit stalls and maze-like alleyways is all part of the experience and shopping in the souq is one of the top pastimes for visitors to Oman. Exploring the myriad of stalls reveals a host of local goods like Frankincense, perfumes and fresh spices, alongside traditional handicrafts like Khanjars (Omani knives), Bedu jewelry and colorful hookah pipes. Pay a visit to the Gold Souk, where the honeycomb of stalls are laden with gold and silver jewelry, tuck into some local street food, then put your haggling skills to the test as you scour the markets for unique Omani souvenirs.

Built by the Portuguese during their occupation of the 1580s, Mutrah Fort was a sturdy defensive measure against attack from the rampaging Ottoman army. It’s one of a number of forts they built here, along with Al Jalali, Khasab and Mirani.

▫️ Mutrah Fort is twinned with the Al Jalali Fort, which sits in Muscat harbour a few miles to the south
▫️ The fort is still used for military purposes, so visitors are rarely allowed in, although there are great views from its flanks
▫️ The centre of Muscat is 13 kilometres (8 miles) away as the crow flies
▫️ The historic Mutrah Suq is just a short walk away. Hunt for bargains and haggle in its maze of shopping alleys
▫️ The Mutrah Fort overlooks and protects one of the largest sea ports in #Oman
